Description

SW 63 NW CROWAN TREVOOLE

1/173 Trevoole former Manor House and
- adjoining walls

GV II

Former small manor house including adjoining walls. C17. Granite rubble with
dressed granite moorstone quoins, doorways, mullioned windows and fireplaces.
Corrugated asbestos roof of lower pitch than the original roof. Gable end stacks but
chimneys removed.
2 room former through passage plan with hall/kitchen right and parlour left. Very
large hall fireplace with large C17 bread oven behind each jamb. Large parlour
fireplace with smaller fireplace to former 1st floor room over, sited towards the
rear. Former 2 light hall window, 3 light parlour window plus a 2 light parlour
window in the end wall beside the fireplace. Another C17 single light window with
holes for 2 stanchions survives in the rear wall of the hall, now obscured by
probably C18 rubble lean-to behind the hall, possibly a wash house. Small fireplace
in right hand wall and evidence above of the original very steep roof pitch. (There
is no direct access to the lean-to from the hall). The front doorway is in situ, the
rear doorway blocked an later doorway cut towards the right. Cobbled courtyard at
the front with probably C19 wall in front and on the right, the right hand part with
a front window opening. Now with C20 roof.
2 storeys. 2 window south front. Original chamfered doorway roughly central. 2-
light head of former hall window, right, and 3-light head and jambs of wider parlour
window left. Complete 2-light mullioned window to ground floor at left hand gable
end. Slightly hollow chamfers. The first floor openings, irregularly disposed, are
in altered or resited openings.
Interior The 3 splayed-on-plan granite fireplaces have straight chamfers and
diagonal stops. The bread ovens have steep shouldered arched outer openings and
smaller inner frames for the oven doorways. Corbelled domed rubble interiors. 2
cyma-moulded oak cross beams survive near the hall fireplace.
Trevoole is an interesting 2 room plan C17 house, the hall fully developed as a
kitchen and the parlour serving the function of both a hall and parlour and with an
integral window bay beside the fireplace.
