Farmhouse. Probably early C17. Painted and rendered stone rubble and cob. Rag slate
roof with gable ends. Two rebuilt stone rubble axial stacks with C17 moulded granite
caps and two C20 brick shafts with moulded caps to end stacks, copying the form of
the earlier stacks.
Plan: Original plan uncertain. The house has a three room and through passage plan.
The entrance is near the centre and has a large room, probably the hall to the right
which was originally heated either by an axial stack, backing onto the passage or by
an end stack. This room has a 2-storey hall bay on the higher (right hand) side on
the front and a stair turret to the rear, close to the passage. To the left, on the
lower side of the passage are two rooms. The room directly to the left of the
passage is heated by an axial stack and the room beyond by an end stack. Attached on
front left is an unheated circa C19 one-room plan wing. There is an C19 outshut on
the right hand end of the house continuing around to the rear, joining the stair
projection to the rear of the hall.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 3:1 window front with lower end on left, wing
to front left and 2-storey hall bay to front right. Entrance near centre with C20
door. To left, 4-light C17 timber mullion window with multiple moulded king mullion
and ovolo moulded flanking mullions. Hood mould above. To the right of the entrance
is a small C17 3-light timber mullion window with multiple moulded frame and
mullions. In the hall bay which projects to the right is a 4-light C17. timber
mullion window, similar to that on the left hand side of the entrance. On the first
floor are two C19 or early C20 3-light casements to left and centre with a row of
blocked pigeon holes between and a similar 2-light casement to right. 3-light
casement in gable of 2-storey hall projection. Projecting to front left is a 2-
storey unheated wing with door on left hand side of side elevation with late C19 or
C20 3-light casement on ground and first floor.
On the rear elevation there is a C17 chamfered square headed timber door frame to the
rear of the passage.
Interior: Not accessible. Although the fireplaces have been covered over with later
grates (information from owner) there are probably earlier dressed stone and timber
fireplaces. The stair in the stair projection to the rear of the hall may be
original or of the later C17. A full interior inspection will probably reveal
several interesting features. Roof replaced in mid C20 (information from owner).
