LANSALLOS LANDAVIDDY LANE, Polperro
SX 2051-2151
5/31 Holy Well
-
II
Holy well house. Well probably dedicated to St Peter. Possibly medieval origins.
Field spring issuing from rock. Believed that much of well disappeared during road
works in C20. Chapel of St Peter of Porthpyre was situated in field above well.
Quiller Couch described spring in 1895 as
"never dry and much credited for its special virtues reputation has long survived the
edifice which once enclosed its holy water and the name of its patron is gone for
ever though probably was St Peter the special guardian of Fishermen as on Landaviddy
Estate where the Well is situated are the ruins of the chapel of St Peter of
Porthpyre existing in 1392. The spring is still resorted to by those with bad eyes
and other ailments and if ceremonies are done aright with well attested benefits.
