House. 1934. By Colin Lucas for Mrs. M.Sewell. Reinforced concrete
slab roof. Two storeys. The plan is arranged around the living room
on the ground floor, facing south west with kitchen and boiler room
etc at either end. The smaller first floor has bedrooms opening onto small
roof - terraces at either end. The windows are steel casements and
fixed lights, now replaced to the kitchen, living room and boiler room by
aluminium windows of compatible form also designed by Lucas. The garden
front is symmetrical, with 3 bays of 3:2:3 panes to each storey; large
overhang to roof. The service rooms break forward and are blind on this
front. The entrance front has a small glazed flat-roofed porch at left
from which rises diagonally the cantilevered staircase with raking
strip window. Flush garage doors to right. The interior is completely
plain except for a fire surround of broad flat slabs of genuine travertine.
Floor of maple wood. Upstairs floors are of compressed sawdust. Flush
doors with original door furniture. A very well preserved example of
a small house in the International Modern Style.
