House. 1891- c.1900 rebuilding, after destruction by fire of c.1845 house,
on site of house owned from 1652 by Shafto family. Library wing said to be
survivor of early C19 house. Sandstone rubble with ashlar plinth, ashlar and
brick dressings; library wing rendered with ashlar plinth and dressings. Roof
graduated Lakeland slate with ashlar-corniced brick and rendered chimneys, and
roll-moulded lead ridge;rear slope Welsh slate. Irregular plan around rear
courtyard. East elevation to garden 2 storeys, 7 bays; library wing set back
at left and attached to rear outbuildings which join left return of main
range. Front has tetrastyle porch with tryglyph frieze in third bay;half-glazed
double doors under fanlight with radiating glazing bars. Ground floor has
margined sashes in brick jambs under flat brick arches; projecting stone
sills; right end bay blank. first floor has similar jambs and sills to 9-pane
sashes (except for casement with Gothic glazing bars over porch). Eaves band
lintels below top cornice. Ball finials on small pediment over entrance bay.
Ridge chimneys. Set-back, one-storey, 2-bay outbuildings blank to front except
for door to pent conservatory. Library wing attached to left end of outbuilding
has one high storey, and one blank bay to front; left return has 3 French
windows with high overlights. Coped parapet on eaves bands, continuing around
recessed quadrant-plan corners. Right return has long service wing. Rear
elevation of main range has near-central porch with hipped roof.
