Mill Farmhouse
II
Railway bridge with twin tunnels. About 1830 for the Clarence Railway Company.
Sandstone ashlar. Bridge carries a huge embankment of the disused Simpasture
to Port Clarence Railway across the River Skerne. Similar north and south faces
front c.60-metre long river tunnel and separate storm drain. South face has
chamfered rustication and is divided into 2 sections by 3 battered pilasters.
Circular river entrance has skew voussoirs and smaller elliptical-arched storm
drain to left. Short, set-back embankment walls flank main section of bridge.
Low parapet, defined by large roll moulding and segmental coping, breaks forward
over pilasters. Similar north front lacks flanking embankment walls. This bridge
straddles the parishes of Great Aycliffe and Mordon.
