Description

NZ 23 SE SPENNYMOOR CHURCH CLOSE
(North side)
Kirk Merrington

6/34 Gate piers, gate
and walls to
south-west of
Hallgarth farmhouse
GV II

Gate piers to pedestrian and vehicle entrances to garden, with blocked stile
beside vehicle entrance, and pedestrian gate. Probably late C18. Sandstone
rubble walls, with flat stone coping of large rough slabs; ashlar piers;
wrought iron gate. Wall c.one metre high curves round west and south sides
of garden in front of Hallgarth farmhouse (q.v.) and is ramped up to join
outbuilding on south of house. At west it is interrupted by plain piers,with
arched heads, flanking spike-headed gate. On south, square-section piers with
pointed tops flank C20 gate; blocked narrow opening at right side of this
entrance suggests former stile. C20 gate is not of interest.
