Memorial to disaster at Trimdon Grange Colliery. 1882 by C. Ryder and Sons
of Bishop Auckland. Sandstone. Gothic Revival style. About 6.0 metres tall.
Square-plan pedestal surmounted by spire with cross. Pedestal has tall 2-step
base bearing sculptor's name. Die has roll-moulded plinth with semicircular
panel on east inscribed:
ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW WORKMEN AND FRIENDS AS A TOKEN
OF THEIR SINCERE RESPECT.
Recessed pointed-arched panels, on each face of die, framed by grey marble
angle colonnettes. Panel facing east inscribed:
IN MEMORY OF THE 74 MEN AND BOYS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES BY TH
THE EXPLOSION AT TRIMDON GRANGE COLLIERY, THURSDAY FEB. 10
1882. THE FOLLOWING 26 OF WHOM ARE HERE INTERRED.
The other panels list the names and ages of the 26 victims. Die has a heavy
roll-moulded cap. Octagonal-plan spire has sunk panels containing blind
tracery and is surmounted by a bulky stone cross. The spire stands on a
square-plan base with narrative reliefs on each face showing: 1. miner
holding safety lamp on his way to work; 2. injured miner being pulled clear
by a rescuer; 3. miner's widow and child kneeling by a headstone; 4. clasped
hands signifying comradeship. The corners between each panel are cut back and
contain foliage carving.
