Description

LINKINHORNE DOWNGATE
SX 27 SE
6/35 South Yolland Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Late C17 origin, circa 1690; remodelled and extended in circa C18, with
additions and alterations of mid C19. Some later alterations. Granite rubble.
Asbestos slate roof with gable ends and gable end stacks. Cider house attached to
left has slurried slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends.
Plan: 2-room plan, with central entrance to cross passage; kitchen to right and hall
to left, each room heated by gable end stack. Probably in the mid C18, the passage
was widened for the insertion of a straight stair; this made the hall a smaller room,
and the kitchen larger, with what may have been a rear passage door left in the rear
of the former kitchen, which became a parlour. A 2-storey outshut was built behind
the whole range, with a kitchen heated by a rear lateral stack to right and an
unheated dairy to left. Possibly at about the same time a cider house of one-room
plan was added to the left side. In the mid C19, a rear kitchen was added to rear
right, and extended to form a range of single storey outhouses parallel to the main
house. This formed a narrow yard behind the house.
Exterior: 2 storeys, symmetrical 3-window range; first floor has 16-pane sashes,
ground floor has central half-glazed door with hipped slate hood, 20-pane sash to
left and 12-pane sash with sidelights to right. Ground floor windows have cambered
stone heads. Attached to left is the cider house, of single storey with apple loft
over. This has 2-light window with shutters at ground floor. Left gable end has
loading door to the apple loft. Right end has external stack with curved oven
projecting at the base. The outshut has 2-light 8-pane casement with L hinges and
cambered head at ground floor, 2-light 2-pane casement with cambered head at first
floor. The rear kitchen has C20 porch and C20 3-light casement. At the rear, there
are two 2-light casements at first floor 8-panes each light with L hinges and crown
glass with bull's eyes; ground floor single light and 2-light casement to dairy.
Door to cider house at end right.
Interior: Room to front right, the original kitchen, has a granite fireplace, only
the jambs visible, chamfered with pyramid stops, with later wooden chimneypiece
concealing the lintel. Panelled cupboard to right and 2-panelled shutters to window.
Entrance passage has straight stair. In the rear outshut, there is a winder stair
with stick balusters to centre. Dairy to rear left has slate floor and winder slate
shelves. The doorway in the rear of the original kitchen may be the site of the
former rear passage door; the floor on the outer side of this doorway has granite
paving.
The cider house retains the complete machinery for cider making. The crushing bowl
is in stone with wooden lining, with stone wheel in granite on wooden shaft. The
cider press is also complete, with the spanner for turning the press, and a wooden
pier about one metre away, set on a plinth on the floor and secured to the ceiling,
which may have been used to gain force with the spanner for turning the press.
Granite trough. This is a rare survival.
