Mine captain's house at Phoenix United Mine, now house. Late C19, with few later
alterations. Granite rubble with granite quoins. Hipped slate roof with lead rolls
to hips and ridge and deep eaves; stacks with brick shafts to sides.
Plan: Double depth plan with central entrance and principal room to front to right
and left, with service rooms to rear. Front and rear rooms all heated by side
stacks. Unheated service addition of later C19 to left side.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 3-window range. First floor has 12-pane sashes,
ground floor has central panelled door in shallow porch with overlight and cornice.
To left a 16-pane sash and to right a C20 French window. Attached to left a single
storey rendered lean-to with 2-light C20 casement to front. Right side has central
8-pane sash at ground and first floor. Left side has two 4-pane lights at first
floor. Lean-to has 4-pane sash, door and 2-light casement. Rear has 12-pane sash at
ground and first floor to left and right. Central 2-storey square bay in brick,
rendered at ground floor, with 16-pane sash to rear and door to side at ground floor;
first floor has two 12-pane sashes, with 12-pane sash to each side, with pilasters
between.
