Description

SW 72 SW MAWGAN-IN-MENEAGE

4/134 Higher Relowas Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse. C18, extended in the C19. Mixed rubble to ground floor and gable ends,
cob to part of 1st floor, painted and rendered to front. Some granite dressings.
Steep concrete tile roof over original part; lower-pitched scantle slate roof over
right hand C19 part. Brick chimneys over original gable ends, left and towards
right, and brick chimney over right hand gable end.
T-shaped 3 room plan plus C19 one room extension on right and outbuilding service
wing at right angles to rear, plus 2 corrugated iron sheathed lean-tos between rear
wing and outbuilding service wing. The original 3 room part has 2 rooms to the
front, the right hand one wider, probably the hall/kitchen; cross passage between
leading to integral rear service wing at right angles consisting of unheated service
room and presumably the stair. This wing originally had an attic room.
Two storeys. Overall 4 window front: nearly symmetrical 3-window front with nearly
central doorway, left, and one window front of C19 extension right. Top glazed door
to original doorway within C20 glazed lean-to porch. The window over the doorway and
to the 1st floor right of this are circa early C19 24 panes 3-light casements; the
other windows at the front are C20.
The rear wall of the original gable ended wing has 2 circa late C18 - early C19
windows with horizontal glazing bars; the left hand one (ground floor) is a 2-light
casement; the right hand one (mid floor, probably for stair) is wider with 3-light
casement. There are 2 blocked window openings to the middle of the gable one above
the other.
Interior not accessible at the time of survey.
An interesting 3-room T-plan farmhouse, essentially unaltered at the rear.
