Description

ST DOMINICK COTEHELE MILL
SX 46 NW
4/228 The Mill
GV II
Watermill with attached cider house on the Cotehele estate; formerly known as Morden
Mill. Probably C18, remodelled and extended in the C19 in 2 builds, with the addition
of the cider house and the secondary mill, which is now a house. Restored C20.
Slatestone rubble with stone dressings. Slate roofs with ridge tiles and gable ends.
Plan: The main mill building is in the centre, with the waterwheel at the rear, the
launder running along the rear from left to right; the cider house is to end left,
built against the bank with an upper entrance at road level. The secondary mill,
which formerly also had a waterwheel at the rear, is to left, now converted as living
accommodation.
Exterior: The cider house is to end left, of 3 stories and loft, a symmetrical 3-
window front with a straight joint to the main mill to right. Ground floor has
central plain door with 16-pane sash to right and left, all with stone heads with
hood moulds. First floor has two 12-pane lights with flat stone arches and hood
moulds; second floor has two 8-pane lights with flat stone arches and hood moulds.
The central mill is on a plinth, of 3 stories with loft, a symmetrical 3-window
front. Ground floor has central door, 12-pane light to right and left, all with flat
stone arches and hood moulds. First floor has central loading door with 12-pane light
to right and left, with flat stone arches and hood moulds. Second floor has two 8-
pane lights with cambered stone arches. At the right side at left level there is a
single light. The secondary mill to right is a lower 2-storey building, with 2-window
front. Ground floor has 2-light casement and door, both with cambered stone arches
and hood moulds. First floor has two C20 2-light casements. The left end is on the
roadside. There is a flight of stone steps against the retaining wall, with a doorway
at first floor and to the loft; the loft doorway has a porch carried over the steps,
giving access directly from the road. The right end of the secondary mill has a
central cellar door with single shuttered window to right and left. Ground floor has
2-light casement with cambered stone head and hood mould, blocked single light to
left; first floor has similar window, and narrow light at loft level. At the rear,
the main mill building has first floor casement and single light at the loft level;
there is a wooden launder carried on a rubble pier, driving an overshot wheel. The
rear of the secondary mill to left has two 2-light casements at ground and first
floor. The rear of the cider house has door and external stack; the building was
formerly partly used as a bakehouse. 2-light casement at first floor and loft level.
Interior: The mill retains a complete set of machinery driving 2 sets of stones, one
Buhrstone, in wooden housing. Sack pulley wheel geared from the main drive. The pit
wheel and other wheels are wooden with wooden cogs; now subsidiary gear to right side
and one to front for the 2 pairs of stones, an unusual arrangement. The front gearing
is cast iron, probably a C19 later replacement. There is also a belt drive bringing
the floor down to a wooden chute where the sacks were filled.
