GV II
Pair of Bedford Estate Cottages. Probably 1860's for the 7th Duke. Red
brick, with light red brick dressings. C20 tile roofs. 2 storeys. Irregular
plan. Casement windows with timber mullions of 2 and 3 lights to round floor,
mostly of 2 lights to first floor. All are under gauged brick flat arches
those to ground floor with simple dripmoulds. First floor windows of front
block rise slightly above eaves level, LH one in small 2-storeyed projecting
gable, RH one under gabled dormer. Plank doors under gauged brick flat heads.
Dentil eaves cornice. 2 multiple chimney stacks with diagonal shafts linked
by moulded bases and caps. The 7th Duke of Bedford recognised the advantages
of housing agricultural labourers in comfortable cottages. From the late
1840's onwards the emphasis in Bedford Estate cottage building was on the
utilitarian rather than the Picturesque. The cottages are remarkable for the
high quality of construction of humble dwellings at an early date and were an
influential contribution to the development of working-class housing. This
particular block, although somewhat later than nos. 3 and 4, is included as an
example of the rather plainer type. The (7th) Duke of Bedford: Plans and
Elevations of cottages for Agricultural Labourers, London, 1850 (reprint of
letter and plans sent 1849 to Earl of Chichester, President of Royal
Agricultural Society); The (11th) Duke of Bedford: A Great Agricultural
Estate, being the story of the Origin and Administration of Woburn and
Thorney, London, 1897; Rev C H Hartshorne: The System of building labourers'
cottages pursued on the estates of His Grace the Duke of Bedford.n.d but
probably 1849.
