Description

BLISLAND TEMPLE
SX 17 SW
9/84 Old Farmhouse and adjoining barn at
- Merrifield
II

House and barn adjoining, now used as store. Circa C18 or earlier. Stone rubble.
Slate roof with gable ends. Projecting stone rubble stack on left hand gable end.
Plan: Original plan uncertain; the house and barn are built along the slope with the
house at the lower end on left. There is a thick cross wall which continues up to
the apex, separating the house and barn. House to left with entrance and probably
originally through passage on the (right) higher side and the fireplace in the lower
left hand gable end. The barn to right has a thick cross wall dividing the ground
floor in 2, with several straight joints on the front and rear walls. In circa late
C18 a service outshot was added to the rear of the house on the left.
Exterior: 2 storeys; house on left with window to left, stone rubble porch with lean-
to roof to right and 2 windows above. The barn to right is set forward; ventilation
slit to left, door, C20 outshot extension of concrete block, window, door and window.
Door and window above. External steps up to loft, to rear of barn and lean-to
outshot to rear of the house.
Interior: House with renewed C19 or C20 ceiling beams. Unmoulded granite lintel to
fireplace with blocked cloam oven. Roof trusses of 'A' frame construction, halved,
lap-jointed and pegged and nailed. In barn the ceiling beams have been replaced and
the roof structure was not accessible. Cobbled floor on right.
Owing to the circa C19 alterations, there was no visible evidence of an earlier date
for this building. However, the plan is particularly unusual for Cornwall and the
old farmhouse and barn may well have earlier origins.
