Country House, now a special school. 1814-1815 (dated 1815 over main entrance)
by John Webb of Staffordshire for Henry Skrine; altered and extended 1907.
Ashlar, hipped slate roof concealed behind embattled parapet, cornice.
Picturesque Tudor Gothic, asymmetrical and irregular on plan and in elevation.
2 storeys, but with towers and turrets, octagonal corner turrets; 3 storey
tower with battlements and blank machicolations to left. Single and multi-light
casement windows; some with square heads, cusped and plain 4-centred arch heads;
some with mullions and transoms; drip moulds. Groups of tall stacks set
diagonally. Embattled, gabled porch to right, with 4-centred arch opening.
Large service wing behind. Interior: Main hall has traceried lights. Some
good Gothic details; panelled doors; marble fireplaces; plaster vaulted
ceiling to hall and staircase; moulded cornices; cantilever staircase with cast
iron Gothic balustrade. An early example of C19th Tudor Gothic revival.
