Description

SW 62 SE CURY

3/16 Pogrean Farmhouse
-
II

Farmhouse. C18, possibly remodelled from a C17 house. Painted shale rubble and some
cob, partly rendered to front, granite and slate sills, wooden lintels. Scantle
slate roofs on 3 levels with brick chimneys over gable ends of taller main part,
lower pitched roof adjoining left-hand gable end with external stone 3-stage breast
surmounted by square brick chimney to far left gable end. Further gable end to wing
projecting at front on right with chimney removed probably C20.
Double depth plan with 2 principal front rooms and central entrance passage with
stairs at rear; and slightly shallower rear service rooms, pantry or dairy to left
and back kitchen with large hearth to right. The partition between the kitchen and
front room is cranked to give more space at the hearth end. At the left end a 1-room
plan wing, with gable end stack which may be of C17 origin. At front of right-hand
end, a mid C19 1-room plan wing at right angles, containing a second staircase.
2 storeys. Overall 4-window south west front of 1-window front set back on left;
main 3- window front and projecting gable end of circa mid C19 wing on right. Main
front may have been nearly symmetrical and 4-pane sash to ground floor right of
doorway is probably a recut opening to left of now blocked original opening,
(probably carried out when wing added and reception room subdivided). Ground floor
left and first floor windows are the original C18 12-pane horizontal sliding sashes.
Central doorway is within C20 glazed porch. Chamfered and stopped wooden lintels
over first floor left and middle windows and reused C17 ovolo-moulded lintel over
first floor right-hand window. Front of single cell part on left has irregularly
disposed wide window openings to ground and first floor and smaller square window to
ground floor right; all with 2-light casements.
Rear has slightly irregularly disposed window openings with mid-floor central stair
window. Blocked openings at left of stair window and below. Old 3-light casement
with 6 panes per light at ground floor left and 2-light casement to first floor over
with horizontal wooden glazing bars with some leaded panes between. Other windows
are later replacements. Chamfered and stopped wooden lintels over original openings.
Wide 4-panel door within C20 porch to single cell part, right.
Wing has tall round-headed stair window with hornless sash to south-east wall and to
ground floor left of south-east gable end of main house is 2-light 12-pane horizontal
sliding sash. Fixed light to first floor over has horizontal wooden glazing bars
with leaded panes between.
Interior retains much original C18 carpentry and joinery including open-well stair
with rectangular balusters and panelled doors, some with original HL hinges and
original latches. Parts of ground floor, first floor and roof not inspected but said
to be similar period to features seen.
Hardly altered since the C19, this house retains many C18 features and particularly
interesting are the windows with leaded panes, a feature shared with some other
houses of the Lizard Peninsula.
