Description

SU 61 NW DROXFORD
7/60 St Clair's Farmhouse
14.7.82
II*
House. c1350 stone house with upper hall, with C15 timber frame attached, C16
inserted fireplaces and stack, C18 remodelling, to give the present exterior.
Walls of mathematical tiles in 'Flemish' bond, some tile-hanging, frame exposed in
the north bay. Hipped tile roof. Symmetrical east elevation of two storeys
three windows, the upper walls tile-hung: casements: doorway with reeded
architrave, pediment, and 6-panelled door. The west elevation is similar, with
a mid C19 brick porch. The north elevation has a central full-height bay,
of one above three windows, with exposed framing and hipped roof, behind which
rises a massive stack with three separate diagonal flues. Inside, the south east
part of the building has very thick walls, and on the 1st floor is a medieval
stone arch and reveal. The passageway through the middle of the house has on
its north side the external wall of the timber framed part, with exposure of the
close-studding filled with flints. The staircase and doors with architraves
produce a C18 appearance of the interior.
