SU 52 SW OWSLEBURY MARWELL

8/43 Marwell House
5.12.55 (formerly listed Marwell
II Lodge)

Small country house. C18 of 2 periods, C19 and c1935. Brick with hidden slate
roofs. Early C18 6 by 3 bay house with 2 similar bays added to left late C18 and
2 lower bays added to right, with 2 further bays added C19, and bay added to left
c1935. Front 2 storey, 8 main bays and 4 lower service bays to right. Flat
fronted part early Flemish bond brickwork. Doorway in 5th bay from left C18
6-panelled door in arched doorcase, engaged columns, broken entablature, lentil
open pediment and C20 wrought iron fanlight, added to house c1935. Iron tie
across central bays at 1st floor string level. Windows all C18 12-pane sashes
with rubbed brick heads. Plain papapet with stone coping hiding hipped slate
roofs. Stack on parapet between 2nd and 3rd bay from left, on ridge above door
and at either end of main C18 part. Lower service wing has C18 6-panel door and
12-pane sash with 2 short 16-pane sashes above and massive end stack between C18
and C19 2 bays which have large 12-pane sash on ground floor and small one above
interior altered c1955.
