Lodge, to Ashwicke Hall. Circa 1857-60 by J.K. Colling for J.C. Orred.
Coursed squared rubble with freestone dressings and quoins; roofs concealed
behind embattled parapets and moulded string. Gothic lodge, irregular and
asymmetrical. 2 storeys. Single bay to right: 2-light cross windows in
chamfered mullions and surrounds; triangular bay window on ground floor with
embattled parapet and cornice carved with beasts and heads. 3 stage tower to
left, embattled parapet and gargoyles: open lower stage with pointed arch under
hood mould, Y-tracery wrought iron gate with decorative scrolls in the lights,
ribbed vault inside with carved bosses, pointed plank door with decorative strap
hinges; single pointed window with cusped head at first stage. A buttress at
the left of the tower forms a gate pier. Decorative wrought iron gates. The
other gate pier has a crested parapet with band of fleurons; buttresses to either
side, pyramidal capping surmounted by a hare squatting on its rear legs
supporting a shield bearing arms.
