2/120 The Turret

Garden-House free-standing. c.C16, with C18 additions in Gothick style.
Coursed rubble-stone with ashlar dressings. Hexagonal building, with
plinth-mould, moulded string and embattled parapet with crocketed pinnacles
at the angles. The entrance, on the south face, has a depressed-ogee moulded
arch, springing from slender clustered jamb-shafts with crocketed terminals.
Over it is a traceried panel in two heights. Interior: of one stage, has
a semi-circular niche opposite the entrance, with round head under an ogee
label. The hexagonal ceiling is ogee-shaped with moulded angle-ribs, and
is painted with shields of arms. On his 1762 visit to Melbury, Horace Walpole
mentions the new decoration of shields of arms inside. The building is
hexagonal, not octagonal.
