21/213 Walled garden with
gateways
II*
Garden walls and gateways, thought to be by Lancelot Brown c. 1766, except for
south-east gate of 1905. Brick walls in English Garden Wall bond with stone
dressings and wrought-iron gates. Roughly kidney-shaped plan with two gateways
on west and one on south-east. Tall walls with flat stone coping; several busts
set on wall tops at east end of garden. West wall with later internal stone
buttresses; Neptune gate to right has Gibbs surround with block above carrying
lead statue, and open-panelled gate with scrolled ironwork. Garden Gate to left
has piers with moulded plinths and attached jambs; corniced caps with stepped
plinths to flattened ball finials with spikes, on swept bases. South-east gate has
cruciform piers with banded rustication and attached jambs; moulded caps with
urns. Openwork gates with scrolled decoration.
Pent sheds against external face of north wall flanking Owl House (q.v.) not of
interest.
