1907-8, H E Hawker and Mitchell. Edwardian classical public building, a slightly
more elaborate version of Springbourne library (see Holdenhurst Road). Symmetrical
red brick and stone front, entrance up curved steps, with coat-of-arms in segmental
pediment, between Ionic pilasters carrying obelisks. Gables left and right with
diamond patterning in stone apex, big lunette windows with stone mullions and
transom - 3 lights over 5 lights. Gables flanked by flat brick buttresses banded
in stone. Slate roof with white timber louvred cupola, battered sides, low leaded
dome, ornamental finial and weathervane. Flanks have 3 tall windows carried
up as dormers, flat-headed to south, semi-circular (with leaded roofs) to north.
Moulded stone sills and timber cornices, leaded lights. Asymmetrical single-storey
rear, with hipped roofs in echelon and tall chimney with vertical panels. Interior
with barrel-roofed hall behind each gable, modernised.
