Garden house. Mid C18, possibly by William Halfpenny, slightly
altered in late C20. Ashlar on plinth with embattled parapet with
crocketed pinnacles, roof not visible. Two large octagons of 2
storeys joined by single bay with smaller 3-storey octagon behind
containing spiral cantilevered stone stair and with small cupola.
Small C20 extension to rear not of special interest. String
course between floors. Fenestration to each face all sashes with
decorative octagonal glazing and moulded architraves with ogee
arches, some blind at rear. Central door with similar glazing and
enriched surround of small flanking tower niches with crocketed
pinnacles; moulded aprons to each window. Interior retains all
original shutters on ground floor, fireplaces with decorative ogee
surrounds removed from first to ground floor, internal ogee
panelled doors , spiral hollow leaf moulded plaster cornice to one
upstairs room and moulded stone stair with wrought iron balustrade.
Some slight alteration to upper rooms. Set at north end of small
canal. (Christopher Hussey, Country Life Vol LXII, 1927; V.C.H.,
