Early C19 and later. Large house of irregular plan. Painted brick with slate
roof. Early C19, south eastern part is completely round. 2 storeys. The southern
half has a wide verandah on ground floor and similar balcony above, each supported
on Doric columns with an iron balustrade to the balcony. French windows with modern
glazing. Centre chimmeys. Wide Doric porch, with columns and pediment, on the
north side of this round section. A long west wing added circa 1830, 7 windows
including a curved bay at west end. To north of this later C19 wing of 6 windows
including 2 storey bay. The Victoria County history says that this house belonged
to William Stewart Rose the friend of William Pitt who was called "Pitt's Rose"
on that account, and that Scott stayed with him here in 1807 and wrote part of
Marmion in the house, also that Coleridge stayed here in 1816. However, the same
has also been said of Gundimore nearby (qv) and the latter is more likely.
Lawn Cottage, Nelson's Cottage,Sandhills, its lodge and the street boundary wall
and gate piers form a group. The lodge at Sandhills is of local interest.
