Erected 1862 by John Mowlem. A granite Tuscan column, set on 2 stone steps and
inscribed - "In commemoration of a great naval battle fought with the Danes -in Swanage
Bay by Alfred the Great. AD 877". "Erected by Johm Mowlem. AD 1862". On top of the
columns are 4 cannon balls, brought from the Crimean War. (This motif was repeated
round the tennis courts of Purbeck House qv). A prominent feature of the sea front.
