8/213 Tithe Barn, Highleadon Court

II*

Barn; C15 or early C16, for Abbey of St. Peter, Gloucester.
Close-studded timber framing, vertical boarding to cover voids,
some weatherboarding; about 2.3m high base, well squared, coursed
stone; corrugated-iron roof. Seven bays, central threshing
floor. East face, towards yard: chamfered plinth to stone base,
further chamfered offset near top of stonework. Originally stone
buttress each bay, 3 survive in left half, one removed, stonework
patched in brick. Framing 2-panels high, some panels open: studs
grooved for laths for daub originally. Central doors up a step:
double boarded doors height of plinth only: above timber-framed
infill faced butt-jointed boarding, central shuttered opening.
Tudor arch to head, close studding above. To right 3 buttresses
missing, also 2 studs by doors. No plinth or offsets to gable
stonework.
Internally, stone-paved threshing floor: inserted lm high walls
each side since removed. Main doorposts and stonework rebated for
original inward-opening doors. Heavy main timbers to frame:
trusses cambered collar, curved braces to main posts, stubb tie
beam and angle struts. Further short strut above collar, further
collar and crown post. Two pairs flat purlins, curved wind-braces
largely survive, no ridge piece. Rafters survive: remains of
plaster on laths or tiling battens in places. Late C20 corn bins
in one half. A well-preserved late medieval barn.
