2/10000 Clippings Green Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Circa late C16, extended in circa mid to late C17 and
refaced in C18 or C19. Timber-framed faced in Flemish bond red brick.
English bond brick at east end. Pantile roof with coped gable ends and
exposed shaped rafter ends. Rendered brick axial stack and brick gable
end stacks. Plan: Overall 4-room plan; the 2 centre rooms (hall left
and parlour right) heated from back-to-back fireplaces in central
axial stack; the service room on left now has a gable end stack. The
right hand room was added in C17, possibly when the axial passage was
formed at the back of the centre right hand room (parlour). Exterior:
2 storeys and attic. Asymmetrical 4-window range. C19 and C20 3- and
4-light casements with glazing bars, those on ground floor in
segmental brick arched openings; those on first floor under eaves are
smaller. C20 French casement to left of centre. East gable end has 4
unmoulded brick mullion 2-light windows with hoodmoulds. At rear
various small casements, small brick 2-light window on left and C20
flat roof extension on right. West end has brick tumbling in gable and
later single storey outbuilding. Interior: Hall has elaborately-
moulded axial beam and bressummer to large brick fireplace with
herringbone brick back. Parlour fireplace has moulded and brattished
bressummer and chamfered axial ceiling beams and cross-beam with
elaborate stops. Moulded 3-plank door to right hand room and exposed
stud partition. Small west end room has chamfered axial beam and
exposed joists and fireplace with timber lintel. Roof over C17
addition exposed in chamber has principals with large chamfered
collar, exposed common rafters, wall-plate and joists set on the
collar. Roof over original part said to be an C18 or early C19 butt-
purlin replacement structure.
