5.12.75 (formerly listed as

Bedgreave Mill)

GV II

Remains of corn mill. C16 or C17, undergoing reconstruction at time of resurvey.
Thinly-coursed sandstone, no roof at time of resurvey. Single storey, single
cell. Large quoins. Intact north gable has inserted doorway on right and
double-chamfered, 2-light mullioned window in gable (now bricked up). Opposite
end wall rebuilt with large, quoined opening spanned by old tie beam, no gable
walling. Right return: side wall has low slit window beneath opening with
square-faced surround.

Interior: central tie beam with soffit mortices, old wall plates.

A mill at Bedgreave is referred to in a settlement to the Darcy family in 1631.
Although apparently post-medieval the building is in the form of a medieval
single-cell mill which would have grindstones raised on a platform at one end
lit by side-wall windows, the drive coming from a pit beneath; survivals of such
medieval structures are exceedingly rare.
