MALTBY SANDBECK PARK
SK59SE
4/57 Ha-ha approximately
50 metres to south
of Sandbeck Park (house)
GV II
Ha-ha. c1771-73. Probably by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown for the Earl of
Scarbrough. Coursed magnesian limestone rubble. Dry-stone retaining wall
capped by overhanging course and forming division between parkland and
gardens to Sandbeck Park (q.v.); continues eastwards from a position
approximately 80 metres to south of the house. The labourer's wage book
(cited in Girouard, p1025) suggests that much of the years 1771-73 were
occupied in constructing ha-has around the house.
M. Girouard, 'Sandbeck Park, Yorkshire - III,' Country Life, Oct 21st 1965.
