River Don wharf
opposite west end

River wharf. Probably improved to its present state in mid C19. Dressed
gritstone. Substantial retaining wall with offset bands and heavy stone
copings linked by iron cramps. Central recess with stone steps down, one
side wall inscribed with line and words 'LEVEL AT STAINFORTH'. Situated on
old course of the River Don which is now canalised to the west. Waterside
formed a port of considerable importance in the area.
