Village cross. Medieval, restored 1887 and 1953. Magnesian limestone.
Square plinth of 3 steps, the lower step chamfered and inscribed 'ERECTED
ABOUT AD 1191 / RESTORED AD 1887 THE / JUBILEE YEAR OF / QUEEN VICTORIA'.
Square cross base with projecting band, inscription 'IICICI' and stone plaque
inscribed 'This cross was erected to commemorate/The freeing from bondage
of/KING RICHARD I circa 1191 / Restored in the Coronation year of / Her
Majesty QUEEN ELIZABETH II / 1953'; half-pyramidal corner stops; inscription
in Norman French translates 'Jesu, the son of Mary, remember our King and
deliver him I pray' (Miller, p247). Stump of shaft. Set in iron-railed
enclosure at important village site.
