Entrance lodge with attached wall. c1750. By James Paine for Josias
Wordsworth. Ashlar magnesian limestone, graduated Westmorland slate roof. 2
storeys, 3 x 1 bays; set as a pavilion facing East Lodqe (q.v.) across the
entrance to Wadworth Hall (q.v.); attached wall with gateway lines west side
of forecourt to the hall. Lodge: plinth; round-arched arcading with openings
to each floor within recessed panels. Central doorway with C20 door and 4-
pane overlight in architrave with rusticated surround and double keystone
breaking into pediment. Flanking 24-pane sashes with double keystones. 1st
floor: impost band beneath unequally-hung 12-pane sashes; voussoirs aligned
with courses. Eaves cornice forms gutter to hipped roof with small stone
stack to front of ridge on right. Left return: round-arched recess with
Venetian window having blind side lights to a 24-pane sash. Forecourt wall
(set back, to front right): near lodge is a doorway in raised panel with
cornice; copings sweep down to lower section of wall on right which links
with wing walls of hall.
