House. c1800. For Thomas Smith. Coursed squared grey gritstone, roof of
small grey slates. Tall house of 2 storeys, 3 bays. East front: central 6-
panel door with fanlight in round-arched surround. On each floor flanking
16-pane sashes in stone surrounds; 12-pane sash above entrance. End stacks.
Rear (west side): tall round-arched central staircase window; sashes with
glazing bars. Single-storey porch added probably late C19. Interior: not
inspected at resurvey. A stone with the date 1731 and initials T S is
recorded on part of the house premises (Speight p 389). The house became
the home of the Rev Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893), Professor of Greek at the
