Description

PANNAL HOWGILL QUARRY ROAD
SE 25 SE (west side)

7/57 Low Buildings Barn

- II

Barn. Dated 1774. Coursed squared gritstone rubble, graduated stone slate
roof. 7 bays with aisle on east side of bays 5, 6 and 7 and a shallower low
central cart entrance under the same roof line. Quoins. Monolithic lintel
to cart entrance with the inscription: " MW "; inserted window bay 1.
1774
Doorway to aisle bays in the left return has a large lintel and 3-part
jambs; a small square opening above. Bulbous kneelers, gable copings.
Rear: tall central cart entrance with quoined jambs and cambered arch; small
slit vents to left. Left return: byre door with monolithic jambs and lintel
to right. Interior: 6 roof trusses with raking struts; the tie beams
supported by 2 aisle posts at their east end. The aisle posts are of
slender crudely cut timbers, the post to truss 6 divides into 2 and a single
brace supports the tie beam. An interesting example of the use of smaller
trees and poorer timber in the later C18 compared to the remains of C17
barns.
