Garden house. Mid C18. Dressed limestone with limestone ashlar quoins and sandstone ashlar dressings; slate roof. Rectangular on plan to front, canted to rear. Single-storey, single-bay pedimented front on plinth, with alternately raised and flat quoins. Central 6-panel door approached by steps within moulded door-case with pulvinated frieze and cornice. Uncarved raised panel above. Moulded eaves band forms the base of the pedimented gable end. Rear: a single blocked window to each canted side, in a plain raised surround with keyblock and sill band. Right return front: a commemorative plaque reads as follows: 'Sir George Cayley, the Father of Aeronautics, born at Scarborough 27 December 1773, died at Brompton Hall 15 December 1857. Scientific aeronautical experiment was pioneered from this building. Here the aeroplane was defined for the first time c1799-1855'. On the inner face of the left hand jamb of the door surround is a rough and weathered graffitti inscription, known as the George Cayley Scratching, which almost certainly records a successful flight of one of Sir George Cayley's model airships in 1820. The inscription reads: ' YDS 141. CG 1820' with a rough drawing of a cigar shaped airship with underslung car carrying a propeller.
