House, early C19 of red brick in Flemish bond, forecourt with stone retaining wall to front. Roof concealed behind stone capped parapet with simple iron railings above. Canted 2-storey bay with hornless sash windows, 8-over-8 pane to centre, flanked by 4-over-4 pane side lights. (This canted bay is depicted on the 1852 1:1056 Ordnance Survey town plan). Door to right has a rectangular overlight with a wedge lintel and appears to open onto a through passage. Window above is blind and also has a wedge lintel.
External inspection of front elevation only (interiors not inspected).
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
No.4 Cliff Street is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Date: the building is of early C19 date.
* Craftsmanship: illustrated by the use of Flemish bond for the brickwork. The large canted bay provides additional interest.
* Group Value: the building has group value with the other listed properties on Cliff Street.
