Former Bakewell Union Workhouse, now hospital administration
block and various offices. c1841 with later additions and
alterations. Coursed limestone with punched sandstone
dressings; graduated slate roof.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey symmetrical front of 1:2:1:2:1 bays, the
single bays project and are gabled; single-storey, single-bay
side wings. 2-storey rear wings return twice to partially
enclose yards set back to each side of main facade. Jacobean
style. Chamfered plinth; large quoins.
Chamfered mullioned windows, with transoms to ground floor,
and with rectangular-pane iron casements with small lozenges.
Central 6-panel door in Tudor-arched surround with hoodmould
which steps over a blank shield; transomed sidelights. 2-light
window with dripstone to first floor; gable clock. Recessed
bays have 3-light and 2-light windows.
Gabled outer bays with 2-storey canted bay windows of 1:3:1
lights under ashlar hipped roofs; gable slits. Beyond left
gable is a diamond-pane iron casement with centre-pivot
opener.
Front and end gables have shaped kneelers and quoined upstands
to ashlar gable copings. Ashlar end stacks and 2 ridge stacks.
Differing single-storey side wings: that on left with 4-light
window; on right with 3-light window and doorway; flat roofs.
Rear wings have various additions and alterations. Broad
Tudor-arched openings onto the yards are infilled by plinth
walls to casements.
Centrepiece of an impressive range of workhouse buildings of
the period.
