10/133 The White House
- II
House. Late C17, altered in C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. One large bay facing W, with internal stack at right
against rear wall, and original lean-to at rear forming a catslide roof. C19
extension at right, with axial stack at right end, and C20 single-storey
extension beyond. 2 storeys. Ground floor, one mid-C19 sash of 10 long panes
and 2 C20 casements. First floor, one early C19 sash of 16 lights, one mid-C19
sash of 8 long panes, and one C20 casement. C20 door. The original bay has a
chamfered transverse beam with stops of indeterminate type, plain joists of
vertical section, and a large wood-burning hearth with blocked aperture for a
former bread oven. Primary straight bracing exposed in left wall. Above the
first floor room is a tiebeam and principal rafter couple at mid-bay, both
housed in the same lap-dovetails in the wallplates. Original floorboards.
Charring reported at the right end of the roof suggests that formerly there was
another bay to right of the stack, damaged by fire and replaced by the present
C19 extension. This type of house is comparable with the 'saltbox' houses of
New England, and is paralleled at Rank's Green Farmhouse, Fairstead (q.v.) The
C19 hearth at right has been blocked and a new hearth made on the other side,
facing into the C20 extension.
