Farmhouse. Late C17. Roughcast cob on stone footings, the left-hand end wall and
rear wing largely rebuilt or recased in brick; gabled-end corrugated iron roof. 3-
room, through-passage plan house, the service end to the right of the passage.
External end stack with slated off-sets to left; formerly external rear lateral
stack to hall with stair turret adjacent. Stacks with brick shafts. C19 outshut.
2 storeys.
Front: 4 window range; 2- and 3-light casement windows, all casements of circa 1794
except for service-end chamber which has cavetto moulding with fillet to surround
and mullion (ovolo moulding internally). Ground floor with late C18 3-light
casements to inner room and hall, with a C17 window to service end (ovolo moulded
internally). Ground floor with late C18 3-light casements to inner room and hall,
with a C17 window to service end (ovolo moulding internally). Wide doorway with
canopy on shaped brackets; panelled door. Right-hand end completely refenestrated
in C20.
Interior: hall with one axial and 2 half beams with ovolo moulding with 2 fillets,
run-out stops with 2 bars; inner room with axial and 1 half beam with ovolo and
cavetto mouldings with fillets and an elaborate stop with saltire and bar. Rear
passage doorway with ovolo moulded surround, the door with moulded studded rails
and fleur-de-lis strap hinges; several late C17 or early C18 fielded panel and
planked doors, one to a corner cupboard with dentilled cornice. Some panelled
internal shutters and window seats. Plenty of crown glass survives, 2 panes
inscribed thus; "Matthew Lee, his hand, Woodbury, Devon, December 3rd 1784" and "I
think Nothing Strange chance/Happen unto all if my lots today/Tomorrow you may
fall. Matt. Lee, July 26th, 1800".
Roof: 2 jointed crucks visible; apex carpentry seems to be renewed; perhaps in the
C18, with collars and kingpost, all pegged. Wing axial stack with moulded cap.
