House. Early C14 aisled hall and crosswing with C16, C18 and early C19
alterations. Timber framed and plastered, with red plain tile hipped and gabled
roof. South front has grey slate roof. 2 storeys. 4 window range C19 vertical
sliding sashes with glazing bars. Doorway has simple flat canopy. Late C16
red brick chimney stacks, part rebuilt at top. Late C16 and C17 gabled wings
at rear, include a late C16 staircase tower. Original open hall is of 2 bays
and retains the whole of the frame, with arch braced arcades with octagonal
posts and ornate octagonal crown posts with moulded bases and capitals. Remains
of both aisles survive with an original 2 centred door head in north wall.
The east wing is late C14, and has similar crown post roof. Late C16 inserted
floor in hall. West wing was added in early C18, with side purlin roof. C16
and early C18 panelling. Early C18 detailing such as doors, architraves etc.
Original build has simple splayed scarfs with over squinted abutments, and
multi-bracing. Moated site. (RCHM 6).
