Wrongly shown on OS map as Yarnbury Grange. Detached house. Late
C17, additions and alterations c1930. Dressed limestone, tiled
roofs with coped verges and limestone stacks with moulded cappings.
C17 house was L-plan with 2-span roof, L-plan 1930's addition to
east. Two-storey and attic, 9-windowed north front; all 2-light,
single or 4-light 1930's chamfered mullioned casements, restored
Tudor-arched doorway and C17-style door to right in cross wing,
with double-gabled coped verges. Right return has 1930's mullioned
casements to ground floor, two C17 two-light recessed chamfered
mullioned casements to first floor, datestone with raised lettering
on lozenges: SM 1580, probably initials of Susan Mompesson. Rear
has 4-bay central range with 1930's mullioned casements and three
hipped dormers with 2-light casements, C17 wing to left retains C17
three-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement to first floor
and 2-light to attic, right return of wing has chamfered stone
doorway and 2-light mullioned casement, other windows all 1930's
mullioned casements, wing to right is 1930's addition in similar
style. Attached to right is English bond brick former dairy with
leaded casements and tiled hipped roof with hipped dormers,
restored 1930's.
Interior retains good late C17 fittings to west ranges: entrance
hall with Tudor-arched moulded stone fireplace and good dog-leg
stairs with barleysugar balusters, closed strings and wide moulded
handrail. Study to rear has open fireplace with chamfered timber
lintel on chamfered jambs, moulded cross beams. Drawing room has
Tudor-arched moulded stone fireplace with rococo wooden surround,
with enriched volutes to egg and dart cornice over scrolled
frieze, probably reset, 8-panelled wainscot doors with strap or H-L
hinges. First floor rooms have wainscot doors, plain open
fireplaces wth timber lintels on stone jambs, some herringbone
brick backs. Attic stairs have barleysugar balusters in same style
as stairs to first floor. Associated with the Mompesson family of
Bathampton House (q.v.).
