4/290 Gate piers and gates to north of
Hatch House (formerly listed as
6.1.66 Gate Piers to Pythouse)
GV II
Gate piers and gates to lime avenue to Hatch House and Pythouse.
Early C18 piers, C19 gates. Two pairs of large square piers with
bands of vermiculation, modillioned cornices to cappings with large
urns to carriage entrance, ball finials to side gate piers. Good
cast iron gates with strapwork-style decoration and arms of Benett
and Stanford and initials BS. Gate piers probably associated with
Hatch House (q.v.) prior to the part demolition of a larger house
in 1770, gates hung here after the marriage of Ellen Stanford to
Vere Benett in late C19. Benetts of Pythouse acquired Hatch in
1840s, probable that lime avenue extended over tunnel (q.v.) during
the C19, so linking these gates with Pythouse on other side of the
road.
