House, formerly farmhouse and public house. Probably late C17 with mid C18
alterations. Coursed red sandstone rubble with large flush quoins; graduated
green slate roof with coped gables and kneelers, stone chimney stacks, one C19
the other stack original. 2 storeys, 3 bays. Plank door has quoined surround
and reeded lintel. Flanking triple casement windows to ground floor have flat
stone mullions; sash windows with glazing bars above have reeded stone
surrounds. Bench mark on quoin stone to right. Single storey outbuilding to
right has sandstone slate roof and plank door. To be included to right at 45°
has sandstone rubble walls with slit vents and plank doors; steeply pitched
corrugated iron roof replacing original thatch. To left of house is small 2
storey, single bay granary of red sandstone rubble walls, Welsh slate roof.
Plank door and small filled upper window. External stone steps to side loft
door. Pub belonged to Sir Richard Hodgson's brewery of Carlisle, but its name
is not listed in the Directories.
