Description

ST MICHAEL CAERHAYS
SW 94 SE
3/146 Little Polgrain Farmhouse
-
II

Farmhouse. Probably circa late C17 - early C18, with alterations of C19 and C20.
Rendered stone rubble. Scantle slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. Gable
end stacks with brick shafts.
Plan: 3-room plan. The entrance leads to a straight stair, with the lower end room
to right, heated from a gabled stack. There is a front lateral passage to left of
the entrance, with a small central unheated room and the parlour to end left, heated
from a gable end stack. The stair is an insertion in the original passage, and there
is a projection to the rear of the house, now used as a pantry, leading from the
kitchen, which may be the site of an original stair.
Exterior: 2 storeys, an asymmetrical 4-window front. All windows are C19 16-pane
sashes with cambered arches. C19 cast iron pump attached to left of the middle
window. Second from right is a C20 half-glazed door with cambered arch. The left
and right ends are blind. The rear is in painted stone rubble. The central room has
a C20 window at ground floor; to left at first floor there is a C19 12-pane sash with
cambered arch lighting the stair, and a small C20 window below to the pantry. The
projection is wide and through two storeys.
Interior: The end room to right and left has C20 fireplaces, and are ceiled. The
stair has an C18 plank and muntin screen to right and left at first floor level.
Rest of the house not inspected.
