(East side) Silloth

5/40 Christ Church

G.V. II

Parish Church. 1870-1 by Cory & Ferguson. Large split grey granite boulders
(brought as ballast in ships from Ireland) on chamfered plinth; string courses,
quoins and dressings of limestone. Welsh slate roof with bands of greenslate;
decorative ridge tiles, coped gables and cross finials. North-east, south-west
alignment. 3-storey west tower/porch with broach spire, 5-bay nave and aisles
with transepts, semicircular apse. Tower has pointed entrance arch of 3 orders
on granite shaft columns. First floor quatrefoil openings; 2-light pointed
openings above, that to west filled by clockface. Spire with small lucarnes.
Nave has 2-light aisle windows, clerestory rose windows in pointed recesses.
Tall lancet apse windows. Interior: all walls with decorative brickwork in red
and yellow bands. 5-bay aisles of stone columns with uncarved capitals, pointed
brick arches. Late C19 furnishings and fittings. Late C19 stained glass in
ritual west and east windows.
