Manor house now farmhouse. Mid C16 with C19 and C20 alterations. Extremely
thick cement rendered walls under graduated greenslate roof with brick chimney
stacks. 2 storeys, 3 bays, with slightly lower 2-bay extension to right. C20
door in chamfered surround under Tudor arch with inscribed initial A. Further
C20 entrance to left within C20 porch. Original window between entrances has
mullions removed and chamfered surround under hoodmould with label stops
inscribed J.A. (John Appleby). Irregularly-spaced sash windows in C19
surrounds. Extension has 2 plank doors and sash windows in stone surrounds.
Rear upper floor 3-light stone-mullioned window has one mullion removed, the
remaining light with round head, under hoodmould with inscribed label stops as
front window. Sash windows in C19 painted stone surrounds. Rear 2-storey,
single-bay extension has C19 sash windows. Interior has inglenook with stone
heck partition and massive firebeam; similar ceiling beam. Original ground
floor window is splayed on the inside and stepped to provide a window seat in
the thickness of the wall. Low roof trusses projecting down into each bedroom
are probably C16. John Appleby acquired the hall in c1567. Sold by the Appleby
family to Sir George Fletcher in 1658/9. See Cumbria County Record Office,
D/Van deeds. Right-angled barn extension to extreme right is not of interest.
