Carriage works and locomotive shed for the Cornwall Railway. Opened 1859. Designed
possibly by I.K. Brunel. Random slatestone rubble with brick dressings; partly
weatherboarded. Slate roof with gable ends, lower range partly roofed in asbestos
slate and corrugated asbestos.
Long rectangular plan in 2 ranges, with entrance for carriages at each gable end;
entrances to front. Main block of 2 storeys and 8 bays, first floor has round-arched
windows with iron frames and radiating heads, arranged four to left and four to
right. Ground floor has 10 openings, windows and 4 doors, all with round-arched
heads. Right gable end has tall sliding doors to left and C20 external stair to
right, leading to door at upper level to rear. Rear has 7 windows at first floor as
on front, ground floors 8 bays, with windows as on front and doors at 3rd bay from
left and 2nd from right.
Attached to left of the main building, a single storey range of it bays, with round-
arched openings with banded brick heads, windows and 4 doors; the roof is partly in
asbestos slate and partly corrugated asbestos. To left gable end weatherboarded,
with sliding doors. The rear has a tall square brick stack with stoke hole or
inspection hole at base; 11 window openings with round-arched banded brick heads,
some blocked.
