10/261 Bridge over railway line and
- safety ramp
GV II
Bridge for cart track over railway line and adjoining safety drag ramp. Built circa 1852 for the West Cornwall Railway. Rock-faced granite brought to course with rock-faced granite dressings. Iron girders carry a wooden road with gravel surface. Single-span bridge through an embankment with battered abutments. Branching from former safety points at one side and sloping up to the
embankment is a presumably sand-filled (overgrown) ramp designed to decelerate any train that went out of control down the line heading for the swing bridge
q.v. The abutments of the bridge have stone parapets with copings ; the bridge itself has a cross-braced wooden parapet.
This safety ramp is considered to be the first example of its kind in England.
