Description

TINTAGEL
SX 08 NE
Disused Farmhouse to south west of
4/149 North and East Truas Farmhouses
II
GV
Farmhouse, now disused. Possibly late C16 or early C17. Slate stone rubble and
quartz. Rag slate roof, partly replaced with corrugated iron; right hand side with
gable ends and lower wing on front right with gable end. The roof structure above
the left hand side has been removed, the eaves line lowered slightly and the roof
replaced with sheets of shallow sloping corrugated iron. The weathering of the
earlier roof line is visible on the left hand gable end of the higher range on the
right. Stone rubble axial stack backs onto right hand side of passage.
Plan altered; probably a 2 room and cross or through passage house with hall on right
heated by a stack which backed onto the higher right hand side of the passage; lower
end may have been unheated or the stack removed and has a shallow 2-storey porch to
front of passage. In circa mid C17 a shallow wing was possibly added to the front
right hand side of the hall range probably to accommodate a stair or an inner room.
In circa C19 a rear wing of probably one-room rectangular plan was added to the rear
of the passage and a further extension of one-room plan was added on the lower left
hand end.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front with lower range on left reduced in height,
re-roofed with almost flat corrugated roof and with masonry partly rebuilt on front
wall. Shallow 2-storey porch and higher hall range on right with gable end to front
wing on right. In lower range on left a straight joint near the left hand gable end
indicates some rebuilding with 2 window openings on ground floor below continuous
slate cill and 2 window openings above. The shallow 2-storey porch has a circa early
slate granite entrance with chamfered lintel and chamfered jambs with the remains of
bar and ball stops. Small 1-light greenstone window in left hand side of porch and
remains of window opening on first floor. To right the remains of a 3-light mullion
window, now reduced to 2, originally lighting the hall. The gabled wing to right is
partly obscured by ivy and has at least 1 small 1-light greenstone window. The right
hand gable end was lit by a similar greenstone window on the ground and first floor,
now only visible from the interior.
Interior : first floor joists removed from hall on right. The hall fireplace which
backs onto the passage has an unmoulded greenstone lintel and cloam oven and the
remains of a first floor fireplace are visible above. Oak door frame with morticed
jambs leading into front right hand wing.
Roof above hall probably replaced in the C18; the four trusses have straight
principals which are partly halved, lapped and crossed and pegged at the apices. The
collars are lap-jointed and pegged onto the face of the principals.
The lower end was not inspected internally.
