Inn, now farmhouse. Early C19, with few later alterations. Rendered stone rubble,
lined out at the front, with painted stone dressings. Slate roof with ridge tiles
and gable ends. Gable end stacks with rendered shafts and diagonally set brick
chimneys.
Plan: Double depth plan, with principal room of equal size to front left and right,
each heated from a gable end stack. Rear central stair hall and shallow rear service
rooms. Stable attached at the right side.
Exterior: 2 storeys and 3 windows, symmetrical front with all windows early C19 16-
pane sashes. Central panelled and glazed C19 door with flat hood with scrolled
dentil cornice, supported on slender granite columns with moulded caps. Plinth and
rusticated pilasters. Right side has attached 2-storey stable with hipped roof ; at
the right side there is a central door with window to right and left, with a splayed
stone head to left. 2 shuttered loading doors at first floor and single bay added to
right with door. Left side of the house has 4-pane sash at first floor to left. The
rear of the house has C20 window to right and left at first floor, with central C19
12-pane sash lighting the stair. Ground floor has central plank door, with 4-pane
sash to left and 2-light casement to right. Rear of the stable has external granite
steps leading to a loft door, with a rubble lean-to at the inner side with 2-light
casement and door.
Interior: In the entrance hall there is a 6-panelled door to right and left ; rear
stair hall has dog-leg stair with stick balusters and scrolled string. The room to
front left has a niche to right and left of the fireplace, with moulded ogee arches.
C20 fireplace. Dado rails and panelled shutters to front windows.
The Racecourse Inn was built to serve the racing on Racecourse Downs to the north.
